How to Become a Freemason

If you have ever wondered how to join a Masonic Lodge, here are some tips about beginning your quest.

Masons have a rule stating that a member of the Fraternity is not allowed to ask a man to join a Lodge;  the prospective member must request admission of his "own free will and accord".

So, YOU must take the initiative.  The question is "How?".

If you see a bumper sticker or emblem similar to the one at the top of this page, you can approach the man displaying the slogan and request a Petition for the Three Degrees.  The emblem is translated, "To Be One, Ask One".

Another way is to simply ask a man whom you know to be a Mason.

If you do not know anyone in the Order, look in your telephone directory's yellow pages and look for "Fraternal Organizations".  The key numbers will be those listing "Masonic" lodges, and they will usually have a number and either "F&AM" or "AF&AM" associated with them.

If you know the location of a Masonic Lodge, check around its entrance door (Don't worry about trespassing).  Lodges will usually post their meeting dates and times.  Then, show up at the proper time and talk with any of the members present; they will steer you to the proper parties.

Barring all the above, consult directory assistance in the capital city of your state for a number for the "Grand Lodge of (your state)".  They will then guide you further.
